A standard custom fiberglass sculpture takes 3 to 6 weeks of production from approved design, plus shipping. Very large or complex landmark pieces take 12 to 16 weeks. Sea freight door-to-door to a US state adds 5 to 9 weeks, so plan on roughly 2 to 4 months total for most orders.
The Full Timeline, Stage by Stage
Every project moves through the same stages. The clock on production does not start when you send an inquiry. It starts when the design is approved and the 30% deposit clears, because that is when the factory books your slot and buys materials.
Below is the timeline FibraCraft works to on a typical order. Design and 3D rendering is free with every inquiry, so the first stage costs you nothing but review time.
| Stage | Duration | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Design and 3D rendering | 3 to 7 days | We build a 3D model from your photos, sketches, drawings or 3D files, plus a free itemized USD quote within 24 hours of inquiry. |
| Client approval and deposit | 1 to 5 days | You review the rendering, request revisions, approve, and pay the 30% deposit. Production start date is set here. |
| Mold making | 5 to 10 days | Plug and tooling built. Mold cost typically runs $1,200 to $1,500 and is quoted separately. |
| Layup and steel framing | 7 to 14 days | Hand layup of marine-grade resin and fiberglass over a welded steel internal frame. |
| Finishing and painting | 5 to 10 days | Sand, prime, UV-stable gel coat, Pantone color matching to about 98% accuracy. |
| QC and crating | 2 to 4 days | Final inspection, photo report to you, custom wooden crate built for ocean transit. |
| Sea freight door-to-door (DDP) to a US state | 5 to 9 weeks | Includes booking, port handling, ocean transit, US customs clearance and final delivery. |
| Air freight (urgent projects) | 1 to 2 weeks | Faster but far more expensive. For large heavy pieces, sea freight runs roughly 80% cheaper. |
Standard Pieces vs Landmark Pieces
Not every sculpture follows the same clock. A life-size figure and a 6-meter landmark animal are different animals in the factory, and the lead time reflects that.
Standard pieces, meaning small props, figures, signs and decorative elements, run 3 to 6 weeks in production. Landmark pieces, meaning very large, structurally complex, or highly detailed installations, run 12 to 16 weeks. The extra time goes into engineering the steel frame, building larger molds, and multiple rounds of surface finishing.
| Project Type | Production Lead Time | Typical Factory-Direct USD Price |
|---|---|---|
| Small props and figures | 3 to 4 weeks | $1,200 to $5,000 |
| Life-size figures | 4 to 6 weeks | $4,500 to $12,000 |
| Large landmark pieces | 12 to 16 weeks | $30,000 to $150,000 |
| Reorder of an existing design | 2 to 4 weeks | Production only, no mold cost |
FibraCraft has delivered 500+ projects worldwide since 2017, including 50+ in the United States, and works with a minimum order of 1 piece. Both one-off custom pieces and batch orders are welcome.
What Actually Delays a Project
In our experience as a custom fiberglass sculpture manufacturer, the factory is rarely the bottleneck. Most delays come from the buyer side or from shipping conditions, and almost all of them are avoidable.
- Late approvals. Every day the rendering sits in someone's inbox is a day production does not start. A 10-day approval delay pushes the whole schedule 10 days.
- Design changes after the mold is made. Once tooling is cut, a shape change means a new mold. That adds 5 to 10 days and a new mold cost of $1,200 to $1,500.
- Missing site measurements. For installed pieces, we need base dimensions, anchor points and clearance. If those arrive late, crating and shipping get pushed.
- Peak-season port congestion. August through October is the busiest window for US imports. Ocean transit can stretch toward the top of the 5 to 9 week range or beyond.
- Chinese New Year shutdown. The factory closes for roughly 2 to 3 weeks around Chinese New Year, and the weeks before and after run slow as workers travel. Projects that land in that window can lose a full month.
How to Protect Your Schedule
Buyers who hit their install dates do four things. They approve fast, they freeze the design, they book freight early, and they order off-peak.
Approve the rendering within 2 to 3 days and pay the deposit the same week. Once you approve, freeze the design. Treat any change after mold making as a new project with a new timeline. Book freight as soon as production starts, not when the crate is ready, because space on vessels tightens in peak season. If your deadline is flexible, place the order in February through May, when the factory and the ports are both quieter.
If you need a piece fast, ask about air freight. It costs more, but it cuts the shipping stage from 5 to 9 weeks down to 1 to 2 weeks, which is often the difference on a hard opening date. You can request a quote and we will show both sea and air options side by side in USD.
Reorders Are Faster
A reorder of a design we have already built skips mold making entirely. The tooling exists, the paint formula is on file, and the steel frame dimensions are already documented. That removes 5 to 10 days from the schedule and the mold cost from the invoice.
Typical reorder production runs 2 to 4 weeks, plus shipping. If you are rolling a sculpture out to multiple locations, order the first piece, confirm it on site, then batch the rest. This is common with theme parks, hotel groups and retail chains that need the same character or mascot in several properties. Batch orders also let us consolidate crating and freight, which lowers the per-piece shipping cost. See our custom FRP sculptures page for material and finish options.
Payment, Warranty and What Is Included
Payment terms are simple: 30% deposit to start production, balance before shipment. Wire transfer and credit cards are both accepted. The quote is itemized in USD and delivered within 24 hours, with mold cost, production, finish and shipping listed separately so you can see exactly where the money goes.
Every piece carries a 12-month warranty against manufacturing and quality defects, documented in writing. Materials are marine-grade resin and UV-stable gel coat, hand laid over a welded steel internal frame. Fire-retardant FRP is available for indoor public spaces. Outdoors, expect a service life of 10 to 30+ years with proper maintenance, including a gel coat refresh every 5 to 7 years.
FAQ
How long does production take for a standard custom fiberglass sculpture?
3 to 6 weeks from approved design and deposit. Add 5 to 9 weeks for sea freight door-to-door to a US state, or 1 to 2 weeks by air.
What is the single biggest cause of delay?
Late client approval. Every day the 3D rendering waits in review is a day production does not start, and a 10-day approval delay moves the delivery date by 10 days.
Can I change the design after production starts?
Before mold making, yes, at no tooling cost. After the mold is cut, a shape change adds 5 to 10 days and a new mold cost of $1,200 to $1,500.
How much deposit is required to start?
30% of the order value starts production, with the balance due before shipment. Wire transfer and credit cards are accepted, and quotes are issued in USD within 24 hours.
Are reorders faster than first orders?
Yes. Reorders skip mold making, saving 5 to 10 days and the tooling cost. Typical reorder production runs 2 to 4 weeks plus shipping.
