FRP is 3–5x stronger than pure resin, lasts 15–25 years outdoors, and shrugs off UV rays that destroy unreinforced resin in a few seasons. Here's exactly what each material is, when to use it, and how to tell them apart.

FRP is a composite: glass fibers (chopped strand mat, woven roving, or both) embedded in a resin matrix — usually orthophthalic polyester, isophthalic polyester, or vinyl ester. The fibers do the heavy lifting; the resin binds and protects them. Wall build-ups on our outdoor sculptures run 3–8mm (⅛″–⅜″) of hand-laid laminate, which is what makes a 10ft statue rigid enough to stand in a hurricane zone.

A "resin sculpture" in the strict sense is cast or 3D-printed from unreinforced resin — typically polyurethane (PU) for cast collectibles or polyester for cheap figurines. E-glass strands carry tensile loads over 200,000 psi each; in a laminate at 60–70% fiber content, that translates to a panel roughly 4x stiffer than the same thickness of pure resin. A 10ft FRP mascot stands in 60mph wind gusts without flexing; a pure-resin casting of the same size would need to be so thick it becomes unshippable.

We finish FRP with a UV-stable ISO/NPG gel coat, 0.5–1.0mm thick, pigmented in the resin itself. That's a sacrificial layer engineered for sunlight. Liquid polyurethane flows into every microscopic crevice of a silicone mold. For collectible figures, miniature dioramas, or any piece under about 2ft where the buyer will hold it and inspect it from 12 inches away, cast polyurethane resin is the industry standard — and it should be. Our FRP work is beautiful, but a 1:6 scale collectible face belongs to PU resin, period.

🏭 Mass Production Economics

Once you need 200+ identical units, casting economics flip. A polyurethane cold-cast cycle is minutes, molds are cheap silicone, and per-unit cost can drop under $10 for small pieces. FRP hand-layup is labor-intensive — a laminate takes a skilled hand, curing time, and finishing. For retail merchandise runs, pure resin wins on unit economics every time.

The middle ground is cold-cast resin — pure resin with metal or stone powder (bronze, marble, granite) added to the mix. It casts like resin but looks like metal or stone, and it's a legitimate option for indoor display pieces where you want the bronze look at a fraction of the cost. Outdoors, though, it inherits pure resin's UV problems, so we recommend it only for covered or indoor spaces.

🥁 The Knock Test

Knock on the surface with your knuckle. A hand-laminated FRP sculpture is a hollow shell, so it responds like a drum — a crisp, resonant tap. A solid pure-resin casting sounds dull and dead, like knocking on a block of plastic. Hollow FRP is also far lighter than it looks, which leads directly to the second test.

⚖️ The Weight Test

A 6ft FRP statue weighs roughly 60–150 lbs depending on wall thickness. The same piece in solid cast resin runs 200–400 lbs. If a piece labeled "fiberglass" is suspiciously heavy for its size, ask why — and check the base rim, where FRP shows a visible laminate edge with fiber texture while resin shows uniform solid plastic.

🔬 The Edge & Backside Check

Look at unfinished areas — the bottom rim, the inside of the base, the back of a mascot's head. FRP reveals layers of glass mat, and cut edges often show fine fiber strands. 🧩 Common Misconceptions, Settled

Three myths we correct in almost every buyer consultation

Myth 1: "All 'resin statues' are the same thing."
They're not. In practice, most outdoor "resin statues" sold in the US are actually FRP — the term is used loosely because "fiberglass statue" sounds industrial. The problem is the exceptions: cheap polyester castings with no fiber that genuinely are pure resin and genuinely will not survive outdoors. Always verify the material, never assume from the label.
Myth 2: "Fiberglass is fragile / will crack easily."
Fragile is the last word for a material used in boat hulls. A proper hand-layup FRP laminate with 3–8mm wall thickness is impact-resistant, and the fiber network stops crack propagation. The fragile reputation comes from thin mass-produced rotocast fiberglass (1–2mm walls) — a completely different product from a hand-laminated sculpture.
Myth 3: "Resin is cheaper, so it's the budget option for big pieces."
Only at small scale. A solid pure-resin 8ft statue needs so much material that it becomes heavier (and costlier) than FRP — plus it fails outdoors in a few years, so you buy twice. For big pieces, FRP is the budget option over the project's lifetime.

🖨️ What About 3D-Printed Resin?

SLA and DLP 3D printers use photopolymer resin — a third category worth knowing. It's brilliant for prototyping and for small, intricate display pieces, and it's how we produce the master patterns for many of our FRP molds. But printed photopolymer is the most UV-sensitive of all three materials: uncoated prints can yellow and turn brittle within months of sun exposure. A 3D print should never be the final material for an outdoor installation; it's the master, and FRP is the sculpture.
